Revision Breast Implant Surgery
What is Revision Breast Implant Surgery?
Implant exchange is a surgical procedure that switches existing implants for new implants that may be of increased, decreased or equivalent size based on patient preferences. When implants are downsized or removed completely this can be combined with a breast uplift (mastopexy) procedure and/or fat grafting to maintain the overall breast shape.
Why Have Revision Breast Implant Surgery?
This procedure might be requested for a number of reasons including:
- To replace implants that have been in situ for a prolonged period
- To treat implant related complications such as capsular contracture
- To alter the size and/or shape of the breast from its current size and shape
- To replace implants with those of a different size but maintain overall breast shape
How is Revision Breast Implant Surgery Performed?
The size and shape of your breasts before surgery will influence the exact procedure recommended by your surgeon.
Implant exchange is achieved by removing your existing implants normally through a pre-existing scar. If indicated a breast uplift (mastopexy) can then be achieved by removing redundant skin and lifting the position of the breast within the remaining skin envelope to a position that is tailored to your new implant size and shape. If indicated fat grafting can then be performed to disguise any pre-existing implant related rippling or provide further volume enhancement.
